San Diego Recommendations

Locals I spoke to say that September/October is the best time to visit SD.

The beaches:

La Jolla: this beach offers beautiful flat rocks and huge waves. The water is clear blue and has a cute village/town to explore. It is small and quaint in a picturesque neighborhood. Highly recommend it.

How to get here from downtown using public transportation: Use the tram (Blue or Green lines) to Old Town Center and take bus #30. (You need to get out of the train/tracks area and cross to the bus area.)

Pacific Beach: the beach has exaggerated tides, and a nice boardwalk, set in what you would imagine a typical, California beach town to look like. You can view the sunset from the grassy knoll up top overlooking the water.

Easy to get to using bus #8 or #9 (8 is more scenic).

Ocean Beach: this beach didn’t impress me, but the activity is very hippie-like. You never know what you will run into, so go with an open mind to explore!

Sunset Cliffs: my favorite place to see the sunset. It is also the most popular. There is a beach, where you can get to hiking down a treacherous cliff, so if you are adventurous- do it. It is easy to spot, because many people are doing it. They may even give you pointers, as they did for me.

If you don’t like walking, I don’t recommend the bus, because the #35 bus stop is on Narragansett and Cable streets, which is quite a few blocks from the Sunset cliffs.

Recommended eatery nearby for breakfast, lunch or dinner: The Little Lion. It is such a quaint French bistro with the food done right and authentically French (and I know French cuisine!). The staff is super friendly. Don’t get there past 8:30 pm, they may not serve you dinner or may run out of food (which means they make their dishes fresh to order).

Mission beach: I honestly didn’t spend too much time here. I passed it on the bus and it seemed far from the beach, but has many parks and waterways for relaxing if you don’t want ocean water.

Where to stay:

I stayed in Little Italy, which isn’t far from the Gaslamp district, which offers a variety of restaurants and nightlife.

There were many vacation homes overlooking the ocean in Pacific and Ocean beaches. Those areas are great to be closer to the beach.

What is a big deal here: Sunsets!

Everyone gathers together to watch them, and it is definitely worth it. The sky literally looks like it’s on fire.
